How to use a Period Cup
Preparation
1. Wash Your Hands: To keep your hands clean while handling your menstrual cup, always use soap and water.
2. Before your first use and after each menstrual cycle, sterilize your cup by boiling it in water for 5-7 minutes.
Insertion, wear, and removal
INSERTION
STEP 1: FOLD THE CUP
There are several folding methods to choose from:
• C-Fold (U-Fold): Press the sides of the cup together to form a C or U shape. Then fold the cup in half to form a U shape.
• To make a smaller insertion point, press one side of the rim down into the base of the cup
• 7-Fold: Flatten the cup and arrange one corner in a 7-finger pattern by folding one corner diagonally to the side.
STEP 2: COMFORTABILITY
Find a comfortable position for insertion, such as standing with one leg elevated, squatting, or sitting in the toilet.
STEP 3: INSERTION
Insert the folded cup gently into your genital area. Avoid aiming straight at your tailbone. The vaginal canal should be low, below the cervix, where the cup should be placed.
STEP 4: LET IT OPEN
The cup will open up once it is inserted to form a seal. The cup might need to be rotated or the rim may need to be pushed around with your finger to make sure it is completely opened.
REMOVAL
STEP 1: WASH YOUR HANDS
Always wash your hands before removing your period cup, just like with insertion.
STEP 2: COMFORT
Find a comfortable spot to be removed, once more.
STEP 3: BREAK THE SEAL
To break the seal, pinch the base of the cup. Pulling on the stem by itself can cause discomfort.
STEP 4: REMOVAL
While removing the cup, wiggle it from side to side. Keep it upright to prevent spills.
Cleaning and Storage
STEP 1: EMPTY IT.
In the toilet flush the collected menstrual fluid.
STEP 2: RINSE AND REUSE
Before reinserting the cup, rinse it with warm water and mild soap. Make sure to clean any small cracks that may exist near the rim.
STEP 3: CLEAN AND STERILE
After your cycle, rinse the cup by boiling it for 5-7 minutes in water.
STEP 4: STORE THE CUP
When not in use, store your period cup in a breathable cotton bag or container.
Although it may take a few cycles to get used to using a period cup, many people find it to be a useful and eco-friendly alternative to disposable menstrual items.
